I can't stand reading all the political ads & posts today so I've decided to focus on my long neglected blog. Yes, I have already voted.

This past weekend I attended a class given by Randall Hasson, artist and calligrapher from Sante Fe, New Mexico. The title of the class was, "The Layered Journal: Text and Texture". The purpose and goal of the class was to learn to add texture to flat surfaces, and experiment with how calligraphy works with texture. The class worked with several different Golden mediums, my favorite was the Matte Medium. This was a clear matte acrylic that could be put down on a journal page and, once dry, gone over with an acrylic wash to give the page a two toned texture effect. The picture below is an example of that.

The calligraphy is not mine. Randall offered to write anything in our journals that we wanted. I wanted the words, "Don't Panic" at the beginning of the journal. Randall started and didn't like the mark made so he turned it into the letter, "I". Kind of changed the meaning of the phrase. It went from a directive, "Don't Panic!" to a declarative, "I Don't Panic!", which sounds a lot braver to me. So I have this reminder at the beginning of my experimental journal that reminds me that I DO NOT PANIC. So I must remember, that I will create without fear.
This is a book I made at a local book artist's home yesterday. It is a slight modification of Keith Smith's Buttonhole binding. I felt a little rushed at the end of class and you can see it in the bottom stitching of the book. I hope to have some time today to sit down and do another book with a little more care and time.

This book is constructed with Davey board which gives it a bit more more heft than using cardstock. The top and bottom part of the spine are wrapped with book cloth. The thread used for binding is a 4-ply waxed linen from Royalwood, Ltd. The inside sections and outside book cover are monoprints done with acrylics and plexiglass. Each one is unique. This is a video on YouTube that is very similar to what I did with my printing.

Instructions for this binding is found in Volume I Non-Adhesive Binding: Books Without Paste or Glue. Keith Smith's books can be found on his website.

It is a very beautiful book, I am definitely going to need to make some more.
These celestial paintings might look complicated but are very easy to create. You may be surprised at how easy it is.

To start you will need:

*Transparent watercolors - These can be the inexpensive kind, pan or liquid. I used Grumbacher on most of my paintings but did one with inexpensive Yarka watercolors. Before starting on the project, moisten pan watercolors with water. I did not use liquid watercolor, but would suggest diluting them with a small amount of water - an intensity of color is wanted.
*Watercolor paper - I used Arches Cold Press 140lb. but any watercolor paper should do.
*Dr. Ph. Martin's Pen White Ink - It may also be possible to use a thin, very OPAQUE white acrylic paint but I have not done this.
*Masking Tape
*Ruler
*Pencil
*Old toothbrush
*1 or 2 brushes for watercolors. I used a round (or mop) brush for the painting, and a flat brush for saturating the paper with water. A larger brush would be better than a small brush. I used a size 12 round brush and a 14 flat brush.
*2 water containers (with clean water - of course!)

1. I wanted a white border on my paintings, so as to resemble a photograph. To do this, very lightly put a small dot inside each corner - a quarter inch down and in from the side. When I was finished it looked like this. (I am working on a small scale, but this should work on most any size watercolor paper)

2. With the masking tape, secure the paper to a smooth surface. You want to bring the tape up to, but not cover, the dots on each corner. I taped my paper to a piece of plexiglass but most any surface should do - just make sure the tape,water, or paints will not ruin the surface you are working on.

3. Liberally wet the watercolor paper. I mean literally make it SOAKING wet.

4. With a wet round brush, pick up yellow. The brush should be fairly thick with paint. Randomly, touch the brush lightly to the wet paper. The yellow paint should spread and create an irregular shape or shapes on the paper.

5. Clean the brush in the first container of water and do a final rinse in the second container. Here I have picked up Burnt Sienna and I am randomly touching the paper with the brush. I do go over *some* of the yellow with the Burnt Sienna.

6. Now I am adding Blue Green.

7. I am adding Ultramarine. The colors should start to meld a little bit but there should be some individual colors showing. If the colors are not seeping into one another, use the brush lightly to move them.

8. At this point it will look like a blobby wet mess. Very carefully, draw off *some* of the liquid by bringing a paper towel up to the edge and letting it touch the watery paint.

9. It doesn't look like much right now but leave the painting to dry. The colors will spread a little bit more and soften as they dry.

10. Once the painting has almost completely dried, the *stars* can be added. A toothbrush will be used for this effect. Saturate the end of the toothbrush with Dr. Ph. Martin's Pen White and flick the bristles a couple of times to get most of the paint out. Now flick the almost dry brush over the painting to create tiny white splatters of dots. Here is the same method done with inexpensive Yarka watercolors using only basic yellow, red, and blue. I actually like this one better than the Grumbacher one. Try experimenting with different colors and see what you get. Leave some lighter areas mixed in with the dark. You might be amazed with what you create!!
I have decided I would like to make a simple book which holds inspirational quotes. I imagined the quotes being on small cards that could be pulled out and read. I eventually decided that I wanted a celestial feel to the book, and after watching a variety of videos on YouTube and glancing through a book called, "The Tao of Watercolor", by Jeanne Carbonetti I decided I would give it a go.

Here is the final result.
A big fat liar. Can I redeem myself, and does anyone really care? I'm a once a year blogger. I need to do better, much better. Not for non-existent readers but for myself. Here's to trying again. Third time's a charm, or something close to that, it is said.

What have I been up to? Well, really a lot. In the past couple of years I've taken up bookbinding. I even attended the American Academy of Bookbinding this Spring in Telluride, Colorado. I was taught French fine leather binding. I am a solid "C" student in fine binding. I would really like to get much better at it, but I am struggling with the fear of failure right now. I need someone to slap me and tell me to get a grip. I know better, and should be plowing right along with my third fine leather binding. But it sits downstairs in my "studio" and threatens me with mediocrity. I prefer to work on bindings that are more simple and still just as beautiful.

One of my favorite bindings is coptic binding. It has an open spine so the stitching can be seen. I'm going to stop here and post it, so at least I'll have an incentive to come back and edit.kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-36196716201942132232012-12-28T12:03:00.002-07:002014-11-04T10:54:57.913-07:00White Christmas

...and let's see if I can stay. I'd like to try and keep this up in 2013 as kind of an online journal and less like a crafty instruction blog.
I'm going to stop here, temporarily as the picture I wanted to upload is still on the CAMERA. Be back soon. Written to no one in particular.kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-78679245620731617702011-10-28T18:49:00.018-06:002014-11-04T10:54:34.640-07:00Pink Mini Albums for a Cure

Laura Denison from The Paper Trail has organized her second annual Pink Mini Album Auction to benefit the Susan G. Komen foundation. I've decided that I needed to get my butt into gear and help. The bonus is that I get to create as well.

My mini album is neither pink nor actually a complete creation of mine. A couple of weeks ago, I just got back from a boy scout trip to New Mexico and had no brain cells left for any kind of originality. I sent a quick email to Laura asking if I could create one of her patterns for the auction and she replied, no problem. So, I set to work on the album below.

Okay, no, that does not look like an album. It's not, it is a small replica of a suitcase that I created from one of Laura's patterns, Vintage Suitcase, to hold the actual album (Although, Laura's pattern does show how to make the suitcase into an album). I made the album inside seperate from the actual suitcase. Unfortunately, I haven't made the time to post any of them. Here is a recent creation:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQca3u5Y-bBR6V-sDrtq7gPIoU2CP9jXXqj2MU5AoxZjSD1mIQyidHU1BwNYIpvdtDhKZWHu1PNsft788pGtEY2_meIN71dTlNMaQV8uHRLuGheMPC265tfESIuDiA5HoW85BHyy0_jVTs/s320/IMG_7791.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454254491444820610" />

It looks like a deck of cards, but it is really a mini notebook.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3VlmQcbYA37DhddiyR7vBhyphenhyphenG3mikhjyXi8MZr8Tjkbk_TKCmbrPr0zR_oY87lcYXq7aYI9kLwVgCMl-U8WQYCbGrU3dYZlCLYArXgZSO5eOTMfDvjeByz0YJTYtqG640-YjeSkNrAghDV/s320/IMG_7792.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454254890687106994" />

I modified a technique I learned from Tascha here. Instead of wrapping the outside pieces of illustration board (mine is just leftover cardboard) I pasted the playing card directly to the board. The board was the same height as the playing card but was about a 1/4 inch (about 0.6 cm) wider and painted with cream acrylic paint. The playing card, obviously, will not cover the entire cardboard - leave this space to the left of the front cover and to the right on the back cover. The spine paper should be cut wide enough to cover this space (my spine paper was 5.5 inches x 1.25 inches). The inside cover paper was exactly the same size as both pieces of cardboard plus a little extra for length (you can cut off any extra later with a craft knife). The inside papers were slightly smaller than the dimensions of the book cover - just center these papers when attaching to the inside cover sheet. If you are not sure of what I am saying, watch Tascha's video and then come back and read again - I think it will be much clearer.

Even if you are not sure of what to do after watching the video and reading my ramblings - go ahead and try it. Here was my first attempt at the modified mini notebook:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs7_twFlfTKTJf68tu1OvrMHEg8MBeQX4t4G3DjUNcUljWzF_VlrCF8yIuTeiP3oG-twGM2L-tpCYCYNkclSxi28b8OEjQvGEHWafj0MeCvdFq8ZpmBBE71K_DjSsm71Ctz2Kkzb2gzf4k/s320/IMG_7793.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454269530463449650" />

Not exactly what I wanted but I was trying to learn and it helped me modify the second one even better. I actually don't like the color of the spine paper on either notebook so I plan to make a few more with some other colors. I think it's a pretty neat little notebook.kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-8137107902414829202010-03-07T23:52:00.007-07:002014-11-04T10:54:11.960-07:00ATC SwapsWhy I am doing this at midnight when I should be asleep? I have no real good answer for that.
Anyway, I recently stumbled across a blog in cyberspace that offered an international ATC (artist trading card) for anyone who wanted to join. Well, my first mistake is looking at what others are doing. Now, I need felt. There are many, many cute and gorgeous things being done with felt embellishments. Yes, I NEED some felt.

Unfortunately, for today's challenge I had no felt. So, I tried the usual Papertrey suspects, the stamp set In Bloom and Copic markers. But I felt that has been done plenty of times before, so I turned to tissue paper flowers (yes, I know - it has also been done many times before - you won't find anything terribly original in this post). So, instead of spritzing them with a glitter spray I painted them with Twinkling H2O's. I thought this gave them a very deep saturated color with some glitz. I was going to top them with buttons but thought they needed something a bit more, so I added some sparkle from Darice (the 1.99 package from Michaels). Voila' tissue paper flower embellishments.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQg8hsfIKWx_BOVj29-MgSlFYCqP_sbXN22C6Xlp5qf5649a-yuudboj7Ih9DNk9bhpaStd6RYmo7T-pdNKIrdaXi6lzVHX9-4d0UuVzAQWgLWE3f_9vBfbVbqtpiSjJ3B3F_akPFvFNmL/s320/IMG_7672.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437905987901758098" />

I didn't have my first choice of colors for the card so I worked with what I had. I also attached a pull drawer box to the back of the card to hold extra embellishments to give the recipient some for their own projects. Oh, and by the way I used my circle scallop Spellbinders to cut out the tissue paper flowers. I find that so much easier than the punch. And if you fold the tissue paper several times over, you get many flowers punched all at one time.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 237px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFEm7m3SW59Rhh4EZ_nvjCLMKuiN7UkjX_VijfT3qD1UTNrJrCLOtjxCm_bX07r2MUFrnreoRtZF5sveJOia-YOWUAcnC2fiX0-rR6mPJHUwdM4npaftGJw8rlLL5eF1Ls4xBdZYjVRSzL/s320/IMG_7673.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437906244166092466" />

So, in short here is the card recipe:

Stamps: Vintage Labels from Papertrey
Ink: Dark Chocolate from Papertrey
Paper: Dark Chocolate & White cardstock from Papertrey
Ribbon: New Leaf Satin by Papertrey, Chocolate Chip taffeta from Stampin Up
Other: Labels 1 die & Flourish Impressabilities from Spellbinder, blue rhinestones from my own stash, handmade embellishments - recipe below.

Flower embellishments:

Tissue paper cut with Spellbinders scalloped circles (the 2 smallest sizes - 2 pieces of each size).
Scalloped circles were then painted with Majestic Blue Twinkling H2O. When I saw that Nichole from Papertrey Ink was having a contest with origami - I had to participate. Origami is a passion of mine. My project for this contest is an origami box. Of all the origami projects and creations out there, boxes are my favorite. This particular box is from a favorite book of mine, Joyful Origami by Tomoko Fuse. The box is called Flowery Pinwheel Octagon box.

Here is a look from the top.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcXhLij7PnqMeernktYNQnkpOLXFR10YkeION6Mow1dPCiJE9VPIt1nIEBupMQMDeJoAu-ttVZkA1wJc6u5mWp7sJadHTr8BWLzewXb0BbKXTjxVGzv-q0ULcJHnNoNlem9jqqcG0o0jEp/s320/IMG_7666.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437645092611932274" />

On another note, wasn't K.D. Well, here it is, a frantic two hours later. I must have embossed 10 of these sets of trees before I got something close to what I wanted. Then I spent a half hour looking for my camera. Can't participate in a challenge purely on a written description of your card - though I was almost prepared to do that when I found the camera (it was on my nightstand - had to use stealth to get it, husband was asleep - so I wrapped my flashlight in my pajamas and had enough light to see it on the nightstand).
So here is the card - voila!
Card Ingredients:
Paper - Enchanted Evening & black from Papertrey
Stamps - Through the Trees & Fancy Flourishes from Papertrey
Ink - Vintage Cream from Papertrey
Two-toned Embossing Powder - Midnight Gold from Moon Glow
Other - enchanted evening ribbon from Papertrey, button from Papertrey, Star Dust Stickles, snowflake brads from my stash.
I didn't have time to let the ink dry before buffing off the embossed trees, so I gently wiped it with a damp papertowel. I thought this gave a very nice wintry effect. The Fancy Flourish stamp looks like swirls of snow :) so I added a couple of snowflake brads. Not too bad for my tenth card (and I'm not showing you the previous nine - you should see my crafting area, let me post a quick photo).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWS14VQKVF7u36MCAffWYavK5AlWEMnQJ4d6W5RGDNXorlYAxtCq326wfQf_HVHzbPP1gxZ9OTYh4jnDiupym89_lTwRFVWJSrFztfxnDDH8C4GHp27kTTnV2j1gU-ODjYf4byxsGYm9Dq/s320/IMG_7644%5B1%5D.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435012154543295650" />

You might be saying that's not so bad - well actually, the whole room looks like that right now. I'm just not backing up to show the whole mess. Scroll down for a project I posted earlier.

This post is a response to Diecut Diva's request for favorite family recipes. If you post a recipe on your blog and then add a link in her comments section you are eligible to win this.

This recipe is my husband's and son's absolute favorite cake. It's a snack cake so it is meant to be eaten sans icing. It also uses mayonnaise instead of eggs. You would never know the mayonnaise is in the cake, all you taste is moist, sweet chocolate cake. I know the recipe by heart.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinGgCmGYnclLUL8NcKUu-k5I7yTbKjazPQ0Q0XWUtrt2sYO6Jxnyu3RQgaT-ScVL-ATAsqgF9-9pzoZfHgL8GSqUMcOCadG969le-Z3r48dhfU-jVATHB7G4YQ1RMhMa5rmLkjJsUESNn7/s320/blogChocoSnackCk1%5B1%5D.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402193282352998882" />

Chocolate Snack Cake

1 cup cold water
1 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Mix water, mayo and vanilla. In another bowl, combine cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Add sugar to mayo mixture and stir until sugar is blended. Add flour mixture to sugar mixture and stir until moistened. Pour cake batter into a greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes* or until a cake tester shows clean.

*My oven typically runs hot so I do not bake the cake for more than 20 minutes. Overbaking will give you a dry, tasteless, crumbly cake and that would ruin the loveliness of this moist dessert.

If desired, sprinkle with some powdered sugar for a nice decorative effect.kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-44704527110389322572009-11-09T09:38:00.011-07:002014-11-04T10:52:41.360-07:00NotesNow with all my excuses behind me I've started doing some handiwork again :) Here is a notebook I made for a friend who just had surgery.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9Ylq-YHWprZ20YsSlVv5N2OMpj55Po_F2T4c6JPc96w1go58fwnTnUYE95Tge0DlSubs9Bh3mzZSHgBgHn8q89dfCG-4wfTSVmglpOiySMokDQxoS4kcNwtwy7bI8R2mahyzjS8sm9UpZ/s320/IMG_6629.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402145813724386466" />

It's a plain composition book that I wrapped with a brown paper bag quite some time ago, so the paper isn't quite as tight and nice as I would have liked it. The paper used is from my scrap pile so I have no idea of the brand or the particular names for the colors (like marigold or sunshine yellow).

I do know the tools I used :) For the butterfly I used the QuicKutz butterfly. The grass or sea (if you think like my husband) was cut using EK Success Dotted Wave border punch. The sun was cut with my Spellbinder Classic Circles, then edged with Stampin Up Pumkin Pie classic ink. The letters were die cut from Cuttlebug's Olivia Alphabet. They are kind of thin and can be hard to work with, but I like the elegant look they give. The flower is a layered Martha Stewart Daisy punch, and the center is Doodlebugs Sugar Coating glitter in Bumblebee topped with a bit of Diamond glaze. And there you have it!kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-57212725916466909522009-11-04T22:24:00.008-07:002014-11-04T10:52:26.717-07:00SUCCESS!!!I am officially done with my reorganization! I have to tell you it feels really good to have that out of the way. I received my cabinet on Monday and have everything in it that was in plastic bins. So, here are some pictures of my space:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdhbUFReiohMwwVCHkWEmdZlySXx0dXA6z787WHHW2wLzxp6QQ1NklmGPfdmB6tZRmkkvJMk1SFRBDrAgRyOsVr6VxRvR0OBsDudCT1L89oT_MrZtvQnzVYSP1qU8Gvr-iMigp8MzQlvEb/s320/IMG_6467.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400486957037174754" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsMOotLYObd2fXJmRne2vCJFSbm40yi7-QC8t7feMbo11YrO1wN2bvDIwshWwysZabmPsTCWAA85Wo1dL56n3P9_jAZ4f-ML0Af0Ztv_Erhz2WenXftchQ2HZe1SpXEfrmh4_YGQ92zhHn/s320/IMG_6468.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400487339680163794" />

The space still has clutter and I don't think I will ever be fully rid of it (unless my house burns down) but I'm really happy with this.

And just for fun, here is a favorite movie character next to my computer monitor. I'd apologize, but I don't even know if there is someone to apologize to. My husband? I'm not even sure if he reads my blog.

I'm the kind of person who either has a hundred projects started or a hundred waiting to be started - well, actually, it's both. My current project is reorganization, which has stalled any current and future crafting project. As you can see below, I can't even get to my crafting space.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDZ3IDKqHOQ7z0bHkQ4C5n7gF5iPQjO8g5dJwnFIJwFd1X11FPdsQrF_kZvE48D_bARgHUJBD94CXKWXF4uufQSsrWOBCRecsHAjdN1qrMCUjXkl74ipTwrN0P94dc5BedBVyzTqbhUjHi/s320/IMG_6435.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395902493546091138" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEWX8Rv-DLRee_cW2ZEYGiVBPDSrI-8r2vt_Ow79bLgRXT8qkcv5phVg5CsVsld0KzGQBdgXg_SjOofFtiVOoCUI4sYUSIX3pttBgDu56ICeX0fQKD19md-u5fpOZA09UxtT6Oq-ZN5wOj/s320/IMG_6436.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395902958122540498" />

It is my intent to put this mess into a craft organizer and have a space that would make Martha Stewart jealous (or at least a Martha Stewart wannabe).

I would actually get my act into gear if I had the CABINET that all the shelves (which I received last week) will go in. I figure I'm either the world's greatest procastinator or I'm so severely time/organizationally challenged that I'm actually occupying a dimension in space that existed two days ago.
Right now, I have company visiting but have finally found some time for myself. What I have been doing with that time is a mystery to me. Wait, I do remember finishing a book called Waiter Rant: Thanks for the Tip - Confessions of a Cynical Waiter by The Waiter.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8BzkxwC1B_QGvIkPseWkXHAcoA1gYvAIHE-PvWnfQikHrAeqQRdAYPpUtSI_D_HzW1-3Z-d3e2OmkPj6qmdBKU-zYpZBwxPC5wR87fWK0_J3CBeSMZS9fhRoP_4sak2nw_z2wYAPOnCHU/s320/waiterrant.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389367218587219890" />
I thought I would really like this book. My family LOVES to eat out and I thought this would be a great way to learn the inside story of waiting tables. I voraciously worked my way through the first half of the book - I found the interaction between the kitchen staff, the waiter and his customers extremely fascinating. I liked the book up until the point I realized I was one of the customers the waiter hated.
"Why?" you might ask, "Would the waiter hate you?" Well, I tip on the total before tax, and I tip in such a manner that my bill total always comes out to an even dollar amount (20 percent, or darn near it). What can I say? It's much easier for me to subtract a even dollar amount from my checkbook. What really got under my skin was that the author put a tipper like myself in the "accountant" category and then wrote that "these people enjoy a special place in hell." I'm not a rude person, I say please, thank you, how are you, and so on. As I read on, I realized that the only customers that this waiter liked were those who tipped 25 percent AFTER taxes. Cynical was an understatement for this gentleman. Not everyone in the world is going to be sugar sweet and free with their money. Why hate the rest of us? I wonder if normal fits somewhere in this author's realm of waiting tables, or if there is just 25 percent tippers and everyone else (who, according to my understanding, are supposed to go to hell). Needless to say, I didn't like the book.
I'm now reading The Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds. I think it was an Oprah pick sometime back. Sounds very interesting, and I hope to get through it in the next couple of weeks. I'll post a review and summary of the book in time (sometime, not sure when, but sometime).kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-11394291464502847412009-09-13T09:57:00.007-06:002014-11-04T10:51:50.820-07:00BlessingsWell, this is a first for me. I am completely prepared for my card swap/project day with the ladies. This NEVER happens. I'm usually throwing stuff in a box hoping something will come to me when I get there. Then I spend my time trying to piece together whatever I brought.
I've already shown you the two swaps I am bringing, the Halloween card and Trick or Treat bag. Well, here is a card that I am bringing to make.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTPdZl4We9F1En94csljzTfpYQHiGbkDwfEDppuZ8nFoqVmsAV4NZf56oC9YFZPXd3lo33YHAfYEYupxxRLJftdE5GH1EnBu9aEJOA9TQsq2XdGop0vNwiuQa5kD8kcAn8GhBefwuJG24-/s320/IMG_5454.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380982561793169170" />

I even had time to cut out all the little pieces so we can spend our time stamping and pasting :) I'm too good.

Here is what I used:

~Ingredient List~

Paper: Ruby Red cardstock from Stampin Up. Green designer paper from Stampin Up's Patterns Pack II. Speckled off-white paper from my own stash.

Stamps: Papertrey's Fall Elegance and Fancy Flourishes

Inks: Papertrey's Pallette Hybrid Inks in Orangerie, New Leaf and Dark Chocolate. Tim Holtz's Distress Ink in Tea Dye for the aged look around the die cut outs. Versamark for the watermark flourish on the card base.

Other: Spellbinder's Large Deckled Rectangles and Small Petite Ovals. Martha Stewart's Lace border punch. Brown satin ribbon (5/8th inch) from Michaels and clear dew drops.kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-87287757589724684142009-09-11T13:04:00.014-06:002014-11-04T10:51:36.421-07:00Trick or TreatOy Vey! I'm killing myself with this bad picture taking. I need to practice where in the house I can get good lighting and can take some good pictures. I took the pictures for the following project outside, but that's not always possible (could be raining, could be dark, could be smoggy from a fire in California, or there might be Bigfoot waiting to sell me a magazine subscription). Anyway here is what I've been working on...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIoLzBX3cu2CrNZMZRJwMqOKYp1GmPoawFXG-qXrwd6anAlJSmlaKuuFXsM-VRirBVmzwTZyKt3E5Uo6nH9__SoTXIvCgyprQrUMsa_yiB-tHYPwow-NCmReLDvF6l69Utm0ZPkqTTMRS-/s320/IMG_5439.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380289126038710226" />

This is a little treat bag for the ladies in my stamping group. I took a picture from the side so you could see the little chocolates I put inside.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRhoHSaJcoGdikXf6rE4ekSC8wtHzAxxmxC4dp6g_JluMKtWxrN67sAzRTNLhqStCdZL5avQjxmINY3amEvbYYRDalnHlwtSbR3iQDfDhkpCOREcKfwZuRzRKicEIVwYfvZ9k5R9H6qLye/s320/IMG_5441.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380289763754749410" />

And here is a stamp image that I couldn't leave out. I'm not typically one for whimsy, but sometimes one just catches my eye and I have to use it. This is one of those images.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1iZYZ4VlDjzDSBMiolXgxVRZpIXuHQ5mkt1L_n1Rz85XQL181AdKyPowkpLADsv7wPYSlR8ritb7CNgmVzTycI4W1DrqohGbbzu2kKljPmSyqm32PVOYAlnrRj8Ezvd4f4aYAp8WViE-G/s320/IMG_5440.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380290435569111362" />

I used a 3.5 x 8.5 inch piece of cardstock and scored it at 3.5", 4" and 7.5". I went ahead and creased all the score marks so that the paper folded into something like a small envelope with a 1/2 inch flat bottom. I then took my deckle scissors and cut the little fold of the envelope for a small decorative edge.

For the front of the card I cut a vanilla cardstock circle with my 2 inch circle punch and stamped it with "Trick or Treat". I added stickles for a bit of glow. I then cut out a 1 x 3.5 inch piece of black cardstock and punched out Martha Stewart's Graveyard Gravestone border punch. Then assembled the front as shown in the picture above.

For the back, I used Spellbinders Label Three for the die cut and stamped the cat image directly onto designer paper. I also stamped the image onto white cardstock and cut out just the toilet paper to paste over the image on the designer paper. I then embellished the back with a die cut from Sizzix Scribble Swirls and a single dew drop.

At this point I added my chocolates (in a 3 x 4 inch cellophane bag) by stapling it to the top inside back of the "envelope". I closed the envelope up and punched on either side of the exposed staple a ribbon slot with my Fiskars punch. I then added 14 inches of 1 inch black organdy ribbon. Tied it shut and voila! A cute Trick or Treat gift.

~Ingredient List~

Paper: Elegant Eggplant, black, vanilla, and white cardstock from Stampin Up. Orange designer paper from Patterns Pack II from Stampin Up.

Stamps: Ghouls & Goblins clear stamps from Inkadinkadoo

Other embellishments: Graveyard border punch from Martha Stewart, 2-inch circle punch, Spellbinders Nestabilities Label Three, Sizzix Scribble Swirls die, Crystal Stickles, 1" black organdy ribbon and a dew drop from my own stash.kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-44624458702354530352009-09-09T23:10:00.014-06:002014-11-04T10:51:18.625-07:00WeekendYes, I'm still working on those crafts - just haven't had time to take some pictures.

The family had a very busy weekend. Usually we are a stay at home kind of family, but this past holiday weekend we had a lot planned. Saturday we attended the opening Air Force Falcon football game. Here are a few pics...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS0TVU3BrRAF5D78gxMj5grQ74VN77AFFp38sdI_a1byZkw3VAAfZHdvDzFmTvc4xbp0avd-g1oUOn0XQjbSDuV79HUv5aYI23uS9FOL89RIZ1dMOts7bi529VY_c0rOOeip7gLasTHQlM/s320/USAFA+Fly+Over.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379702644342534274" />
The Air Force usually has a fly over of some sort at every game. These are F-15's.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1RawVoD-o0CSRoMWcZpqxjlgL5vwOqN_uUI7YCygWzMs9CAoBzKCDVDSdypuX4-2hD0EUk0m9ly_ph886i6H0wZKIYbmB0SlxkCbUCxrSq8VExzvgFr9iwRyyzaUFgmCidjg4m7GHnQUQ/s320/IMG_5181.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379703247506871282" />

Here is a parachutist coming into the stadium before the game.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg80o0OnJIhIUC9oto2kykOA1mWSPifG84tfkFf4zZFn13BFMVRTVGykeayvh7confUqbH69x2p5Fsb0zpd_u32-QrcUE7xH72M95u_GIc-5p4iW_3Uv-_d-0pDWDEeAu1OyfSrnq0UzmG1/s320/IMG_5189.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379703753412032178" />

And here are the Air Force Falcons!! The game was a complete blowout, Air Force won 72 - 0!! Of course, it really wasn't an even match but I really didn't expect to see the Falcons score so high.

Then that evening the family went to a hot air balloon event called a "Balloon Glow". We've been here for several years but had yet to get to this annual event. It was beautiful!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMVlFVNZ-vhrJFi2eHThbSg3MOjlqAq2GIwqhDsS0_G7ex3Y3pj2Z38SC8CYE909HIjy9-WO4fwu8m07RO8KyvzlRdyTI5jP09b5jE0yoJl-fm1Q4C50tVXcr73uz8cpJymF8H9tCjTyYu/s320/IMG_5277.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379705050639065410" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCNCHjOJo046rwjCOJ6y5pLstD8O6Y5s_80KTpMevIvWIcjsMF2wAOXWBuRLuLtMnZeTClbArTc82MvtV_FiVkkPjFFOJOnwVISnboVKl4aykVqZtdYGWSUYcNaCZiWb-O8yn2equFEPbM/s320/IMG_5262.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379705320124519010" />

Then we returned on Monday to watch a mass ascension. I am hoping to have some time this weekend to actually post a project or two. Looking forward to getting them on the blog.kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-42112836094615856632009-09-02T20:51:00.015-06:002014-11-04T10:51:04.182-07:00Crafting TimeIts amazing how I overestimate how many hours there are in a day. You would think that I would have caught on that it is always the same, never enough. I started this blog with the intent of completing at least one project a week and posting it. Ha! I've already blown that resolution. I did complete a project this weekend and I am almost hesitant to post it - because I don't like the way it came out. But I want to at least prove that I try. So here is a picture of my latest attempt at crafting...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOWabL8YpFq17gfb6rN7HW5jqLtzFUZMhtj0rcqjVvB5KgzutTx3gAVK_f7Ze9y-PLnO6wjVr4E46PDofPU_65JW6Vw9LZ4V6m7cG5JluL8TCxy-oxcOdKO2EgtcAHYiw7jy456GVLFrgU/s200/IMG_5162.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377069700355923218" />

Its small because I don't want you to look too closely at it. It is supposed to be a recipe or coupon box. I haven't decided which - because I haven't even decided if I am keeping it at all. I bought a clearance recipe box at Michaels for 47 cents. It was already covered with a cute apple picture but I thought I could do better (ha!) so I re-covered it with some K & Company paper, added some spellbinder die cuts with Stampin Up's Rustic Rooster. I also tried my hand at coloring with copic markers. That was a disaster. Either I picked the wrong colors to blend, didn't blend them properly or both! Then I added the buttons in the vain hope that it might improve. Not really. It also doesn't help that I can't tie a ribbon.

I've also discovered I'm lousy at taking close-up pics. I need to figure out how this camera works - I've only had it for a year. I also know my lighting is terrible in the house. Need to plan better and take pics outside in full sun - or something close to it.

So, I haven't completely abandoned the idea of doing a blog. I'm sure as I muddle through all this new stuff and find a way to create a few more hours in the day, I'll be just fine. Stick with me, okay?kim6erlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16445353554833505766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020574357274183958.post-9296749527508089382009-08-23T22:48:00.040-06:002014-11-04T12:27:25.668-07:00Happy Halloween and Glimmer MistI'm part of a group of ladies that get together once a month to trade cards and do several make and takes. This September we are doing Halloween/Fall cards and I came up with this one.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZfsyz8O1_5Bap18sif2rRv_Tqk8cAUFSdDRchxRP73vnwzIPZjYKwINGzUJtwEl5QJKczEQsUzI1cuevxSDRMefqb4WHvQy5PdAPZ7FWjHrI7EPw7GUjTfNk-oenDSsPVGsrnaDyOYEw-/s320/IMG_5166.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377076647661855074" />

I embossed my favorite new stencil, "Bare Trees" from Dreamweaver, using the Big Shot on SU kraft paper (see yesterday's post for how-to). Using the stencil to mask the embossed kraft paper I lightly sprayed it with Tattered Angels Black Gold Glimmer Mist.
Now I don't know about you but I can make the biggest mess with glitter sprays. It does not matter how much I cover my workspace, I will get glitter mist everywhere. So I recently discovered that I can keep my mess to a minimum if I put what is to be glittered in a box and then spray it. Voila'! The mess is easily contained and I don't have to wipe down everything in sight. Here is the kraft paper and stencil just after spraying:
Don't spray too heavily, a light misting will be enough to show a contrast. If you use too much you risk having the spray ooze under the stencil.

Final touches were the witch image (Broderbund Printshop) printed on SU Barely Banana Cardstock and cut out with a circle punch. Touched up the moon with Crystal Stickles. Used black organdy ribbon with a hand fashioned buckle. Happy Halloween (from Inkadinkado) is embossed in black. Paper is from Stampin Up, Kraft, Pumpkin Pie and Basic Black.
